Bell Let's Talk Day

This event is from the archives of The Notice Board. The event has already taken place and the information contained in this post may no longer be relevant or accurate.

The Student Success Centre will be set up in the PE Foyer from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on January 30th.

All members of the University of Lethbridge community are encouraged to stop by to pick up a toque (or wear one from previous years!), sign the pledge banner, and write a message of encouragement on a talk bubble. The talk bubbles can be put on display in your department or faculty to show support for mental health awareness across our campus! There will also be a photo booth set up throughout the day. Bring a peer or colleague down to take a picture wearing your swag or with your talk bubble and share it on social media as part of the #BellLetsTalk campaign. There will also be posters and other resources available for sharing.

Talking is the best way to start breaking down the barriers associated with mental illness. Join the conversation at 3 p.m. in Andy's Place (AH100), where we will discuss mental health and stigma. All members of the campus community are welcome.

Many people living with a mental illness report that negative stereotypes about mental illness, and the resulting potential for discrimination, cause them more suffering than the illness itself. As a result, two thirds of those suffering from mental illness are too afraid to seek the help that they need.

Mental illness affects people of all ages and from all walks of life. It can take many forms, including depression, anxiety and schizophrenia. Most individuals find ways to live with their illnesses but how they are treated by others often proves to be more of a challenge than the illness itself.

That’s why we are joining the conversation around mental health on Bell Let’s Talk Day, January 30th. Stigma surrounded many diseases in the past, but concerted efforts to confront these attitudes resulted in change for the better, including better treatment, more funding for research, and greater understanding from family, friends and colleagues. The goal is to achieve the same level of acceptance and understanding regarding mental illness.

On Bell Let’s Talk Day, for every text, mobile and long distance call made on the Bell network, tweet using #BellLetsTalk, social media video view, or use of the Facebook frame or Snapchat filter, Bell will contribute 5 cents more to Canadian mental health programs.

Join us as we work together to break down the stigma that surrounds mental illness.
