Borderline Human and Beyond

Gunnhildur Hauksdóttir is an Icelandic visual artist living between Reykjavik, Iceland and Berlin, Germany. Hauksdóttir combines elements of audio, video, performance, sculpture, drawing and text to create transient assemblies, exploring themes like cultural identity, nature, valor and fear. Gunnhildur received her MFA from Sandberg Institute in Holland in 2006 and her BFA from The Iceland University of Arts in 2001. 

Her 2019 projects include Borderline Human for None-Human Animal at the Uppsala Konstmuseum in Sweden, for UofL Art Gallery in Lethbridge and She Will Die By Reality for In August Moon Surrender at Hosek Contemporary in Berlin. She was selected for the Chircolo Scandinavo AIR in Rome for May 2019 and For the LIA International Art Program with support from Goethe Institute for July, August and September.

Her 2018 displays include Borderline Human | Milk River Valley for the Terminal Series at Postwerk in Berlin, Germany. Óróaplott for Earth Homing in Reykjavik, Pendulum Choir Solidarity for Beyond Human Impulses in Athens, Greece and Berlin, Germany, Seismic Choreography at the Galt Museum in Lethbridge.

In 2017, The Pendulum Choir Jäkälä, in Helsinki, The Braid choir, a performance in Mengi, Reykjavík and during the Gallery Weekend 2017 in Berlin with Hošek Contemporary. Abstand, installation and performance for Pole Postitions at Werkhalle Wiesenburg Berlin. Erklärung II, for Hošek Contemporary, Berlin 2017. Five Drawings, an audio installation in Åkerstrøm Kunstsenter in Oslo accompanied with a artist edition of 20/20 including a vinyl with a vocal composition. Five Drawing was also displayed in Nida Art Colony and Ars Communis Residency Centre YO-YO, both in Lithuania 2016,

Gunnhildur made Der Abstand a performance in a collateral event, the Silver Lining at the 2015 Venice Bienale for the Liechtenstein pavilion in Venice and Erklärung an installation and performance in Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein in Vaduz. 

Hauksdóttir is currently engaged in collaboration with the U of L Art Gallery in Lethbridge and the Barret-Henzi Lab in the University of Lethbridge via Level2: Lichen Lab for her work Borderline Human. She was allowed to accompany a team of animal behaviorists to a research site in the Samara on the Great Karoo in South Africa this year for research and to gather subject matter for her works. Hauksdóttir holds a visiting artist position at the Icelandic Academy of the Arts hosting intermissive workshops.
