David Miller’s artwork registers presence and absence. He explores the relationship between what is evident (appearance) and the unrecoverable (disappearance).

David received the Duke and Duchess of York Prize in Photography for two conceptually related but formally distinct bodies of work, projects that he has sustained, developed over many years. In 1985 the artist began research into latent image formation, among photography’s least understood properties. This led to his contextual artworks and to the artist’s “live images” that he continues to exhibit. In 1995 Miller travelled to Auschwitz, the first of several visits he made to the memorial site to photograph the museums’ conservators. This on-going research, called The Museum, has expanded over the years to include subjects and memory sites on three continents and concerns the idea of the unrepresentable.

Currently, David’s exhibition New Borders, is on view in the main gallery at Casa until December 21, 2019.

David Miller earned his BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Halifax. He completed his graduate research at the Emily Carr University of Art + Design, Vancouver. Research into the origins of photography and cameraless photographs began at the Getty Institute, Los Angeles. He studied photography, media arts and experimental cinema at Sheridan College, Ontario; “Theatre of the Oppressed” with Augusto Boal, in Sydney, Cape Breton; art and the public sphere at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver and at the Jan van Eyck Academie, The Netherlands.

Born in Montréal’s Mile End, David has worked across Canada, throughout Europe, the U.S., Israel, China and in Mexico. His work has been presented in Canada and internationally in more than 100 solo and group exhibitions, and can be found in several public collections. Exhibitions include Sol’s Light at Skolska, Prague; Labyrinth of Things, Josef Sudek Atelier, Prague; Das Spydermann at L.A.C.E., Los Angeles; Small World, at the Stadtmuseum, Münster, Germany; Execution at W139, Amsterdam; Markado at Centro de la Imagen, Mexico City; Collecting Shadows, PlugIn ICA, Winnipeg and Being There, CASCO Art Institute, Utrecht. He has collaborated with many artists on performances, media works and public art projects. As a curator he has organized dozens of exhibitions, film and video screenings and publications.

As a teacher, David Miller has mentored artists in Canada, in Europe and in Mexico. His teaching in Canada, Europe and in Mexico include: the Nova Scotia College of Art + Design, Halifax; The Centrum voor Fotografie, Amsterdam; The Banff Centre for the Arts, Banff; Alberta College of Art and Design, Calgary; The School of Fine Art and Music, University of Guelph; The Centro de la Imagen, Mexico City; FaVU, Faculty of Fine Arts, Technical University, Brno; Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague; FAMU, Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts, Prague; New Brunswick College of Craft + Design, Fredericton; Department of Art, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lethbridge.
