Some Music As I See It:

Composition, Transcription, and Improvisation in New Work by Jeff Morton

In a candid presentation, Jeff will relate stories and documentation from recent sound installations, live shows, recording projects, and other curiosities. While sharing about the concepts, tools, and techniques in the various pieces, Jeff will also describe the work of some writers and artists who inspire his practice. In total, the effect is playful, noisy, funny, melodic, and always personal. The work merges elements of contemporary composition, sound art, noise jams, electroacoustic music, programming, and DIY or recycled technologies for live performance.

Jeff Morton is a composer, musician, performer, media artist, and writer. His music and art are playful, experimental explorations of sound, sound-making, communication, and compositional processes using found and musical objects and materials. In performance, composition, and installation, his work has been presented by ensembles and in galleries across Canada and internationally. Jeff completed a Masters Degree in Music Composition at the University of Victoria in 2008.

In 2014 Jeff co-produced and performed at vol.1 and vol. 2 of an electroacoustic new music series in Ottawa entitled J'acousmatic; his sound installation entitled All the Horses was exhibited at the Saskatoon International Children's Festival, where Jeff also led composition and notation workshops with festival participants; and among Jeff's other musical projects, his band Repeat Repeat Offender released its first EP, and his electronic music duo Notaations launched its first two EPs, in addition to performing locally in Ottawa/Gatineau.

Jeffrey Morton is also speaking in the Crossing Boundaries series at Casa in the ATB Financial Community Room on Thursday, February 5th at 7pm
