Mobile (french): originating from the Latin mobilis, it means susceptible of being moved or moving, refers to that which incites or creates an impulse, as well as to the body in motion. The word relates to mobility, mobilize, signifying deep changes, pertaining to motif/motivation, motor, and to that which explains and justifies a judgement or decision.
Some understanding comes through doing. This knowledge belongs to the body in motion: walking, gathering, listening and watching. While walking, all this happens with barely a trace left behind, but with paint, movement is mapped out, recording this encounter of body and matter in space. The marks are bounded, enclosed, and encoded with meaning. On the surface, walking and painting seem to be of quite different natures, but can be experienced as being firmly entwined together. I have come to understand them together as my ‘mobile’.
Anne-Laure will be presenting her thesis exhibition currently on display at the Penny. The installation is an accumulation of her reflections of walking and painting during her last two years in Lethbridge.
Before coming to Lethbridge for her degree, Anne-Laure was based in Montreal, showing there as well as in Toronto. She completed her BFA with a concentration in Painting and Drawing at Concordia University in 2000. For the last six years she has been represented by Muse Gallery in Toronto.
