The Department of Philosophy Colloquium Series will present:
Title: Are we <Bleep>ed? Creativity and the Future of Humanity (if any)
Speaker: Prof. Kent Peacock (Philosophy)
Day/Date: Friday, January 19, 2018
Time: 4:00 p.m.
Location: B-730
Biophilosopher E. O. Wilson recently described creativity as “the unique and defining trait of our species.” We don’t really understand how creativity works, and yet it has gotten H. sapiens through many evolutionary bottlenecks. Now we face the biggest set of bottlenecks of all, engendered by the vast damage we are doing to the very ecosystems that support our existence. Can creativity steer us through the white water again? I will explore the requisites for this
near-miracle to occur, in particular the role that philosophers might play, if they were to take the problem of creativity more seriously than they have so far.
Everyone is welcome.
