Fine Arts Data Physicalization Lab
Leanne Elias (+ Denton Fredrickson)

Physical representations of data have existed for thousands of years. Now, with advances in digital fabrication, actuated tangible interfaces, and projection mapping, a new area of research is emerging: data physicalization.

Data physicalization aims to help people explore, understand, and communicate data using computer-supported physical data representations. The newly-formed dataviz.org call these representations physicalizations, analogously to visualizations – their purely visual counterpart.

The Fine Arts Data Physicalization Lab at the University of Lethbridge works with students and a variety of scientists to explore the intersection of art, new media and data. Using the methodology of both science and art, we let our curiosity drive how we analyze the story an individual data set data is trying to tell.  We strive to combine traditional art-making materials and processes with new ones, and have worked with everything from interactive bar charts to weaving, from meticulously hand-drawn graphs to 3D printed data physicalizations, from crocheted data to electro-acoustic sound compositions.

Leanne Elias is an Associate Professor in the Department of New Media, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lethbridge.
