Release of funds

As a signatory to the Agreement on the Administration of Agency Grants and Awards by Research Institutions with the federal granting agencies, namely the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the University of Lethbridge is required to withhold access to funding for research using human participants or animals until ethics approval has been granted by the appropriate review committee.

Funds may be released, on a pro-rated basis, if the activities involving human participants or animals will only take place in a future fiscal year and the methodology still needs to be determined. The University has in place a two-stage process for the release of agency funding for research projects prior to ethics review, as well as a process for emerging certification if, during the course of a grant, the research changes enough to require ethics certification.
