The Department of History

We are passionate about the past, and are deeply committed to our students and our community.  The study of history plays a key role in a good liberal education because of the temporal and geographical breadth of our courses, the critical thinking skills we instil, our ability to both empathize with and critically evaluate peoples in the past, and our profound understanding of the ways the past shapes the present.

History is a versatile degree and our graduates have gone on to a wide range of careers.  They are working as K-12 teachers in Canada, and ESL teachers around the world.  They’ve gone to law school, grad schools around the world, and many have become History professors themselves.  They are working in a wide range of public and private sector careers such as museums, marketing, university administration, libraries, occupational health and safety, supply chain management, and public relations.  They’ve even become small business owners, including Lethbridge’s own Theoretically Brewing Company and the Hung Sing Koon Kung Fu Studio.
