Position: LPIRG Community Organizer
Contract Starting Date: July 5, 2021
Contract End Date: August 30, 2021
Contract Pay: $20.00 / hour
Work Week: 35 hours a week
The Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group (LPIRG) is looking for a detail-oriented, community-focused candidate for our Canada Summer Jobs position: Community Organizer. This position will report directly to the LPIRG Executive Director and the LPIRG Board of Directors.
The LPIRG Community Organizer position will be expected to work on multiple projects that have been prioritized by the Board of Directors. The work on these projects will require engagement and working with campus and community stakeholders and a focus on the impact on our campus community and our community in Lethbridge. The Community Organizer is expected to build a strong foundation to ensure these projects are operational in the short and long term and will work to set LPIRG up for sustainable success in these projects. LPIRG is committed to the values of environmental sustainability, decolonization, anti-oppression practices and equity. We expect the successful candidate will be committed to the same.
The projects assigned to the Community Organizer include, but are not limited to:

Develop an on-campus community cupboard program.

Develop a relationship with local food producers to continue a community-wide fresh food program.

Develop a book club in collaboration with other on-campus groups.

Manage the LPIRG library.

Work with LPIRG Board of Director members to complete a History of LPIRG ‘zine.
Other duties include: managing the LPIRG general email, supporting the Executive Director with administrative duties, supporting the Executive Director and Board of Directors in engagement strategies for the 2021-2022 academic year.
Qualifications

Comfort with online platforms like Mailchimp, Facebook ads, Eventbrite, and PayPal;

Canada Summer Job Grant qualifications:
-
is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;

is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*; and
-
(c) is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
*International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.
The successful candidate can choose to work from the LPIRG office on the University of Lethbridge campus (dependent on any COVID restrictions and safety) after completing the University of Lethbridge workplace safety course, from home, or a combination of the two as agreed upon by the Community Organizer and the Executive Director. The ability to work on-campus is conditional on pandemic-related campus safety and risk assessment. If working away from the office, the Community Organizer will need a workspace with internet and a functioning device that can manage basic online office platforms (word, excel, etc), online platforms like mailchimp, and Outlook email access. Home internet may be eligible for reimbursement (dependent on eligibility under the Canada Summer Jobs Grant). Personally owned equipment (phone, tablet, laptop) is not eligible for reimbursement. Equipment needed for working from home or from the LPIRG office will be discussed during the interview process.
Compensation
This position is partially funded by the Government of Canada through the Canada Summer Jobs grant. The hourly salary is $20.00. LPIRG provides flexible working hours and 4 paid personal days for the duration of the contract. This contract is for 35 hours a week - the work will be project based. LPIRG does not have set office hours in July and August, and the Community Organizer can work flexible hours depending on project needs.
LPIRG will provide Health and Dental coverage from the ULSU Health and Dental Plan upon the start date of employment. This coverage will provide insurance for the employee and any dependents. This coverage will not include travel insurance. Any additional insurance outside of the ULSU health and dental plan will not be covered by LPIRG. If the employee has alternative coverage, LPIRG will cover the costs up to the equivalent of the ULSU Health and Dental Plan for non-students. Should the employee decline the health and dental coverage, no alternative compensation will be provided.

Staff of LPIRG reserve the right to organize with a trade union of their choice, and/or the International Workers of the World (IWW).
