Windows 11 Upgrade

What is this notice about?

We are asking employees who are currently running Windows 10 on a ULethbridge-owned barcoded computer system, (that is domain joined),  to follow the upgrade instructions to see if your system is eligible to upgrade to Windows 11 and then to run the Windows 11 upgrade once you have backed up any local data to your OneDrive or other suitable backup devices.

Here is a link to a document that lists some of the new features of Windows 11 for your reference.

When will this happen?

We are asking users to look into upgrading their computer systemimmediately as we would like all users to have this completed by August 1, 2025.

What do I need to do?

Windows 10 users need to follow the upgrade instructions to see if the Windows 11 installation is available for their computer system.  If it is, then the user should ensure all locally saved files on their C: drive are backed up to OneDrive or other suitable backup devices. If you are unsure how to do this, please use this request link and a technician will guide you through the process. Once your data is backed up, run the installer as per the instructions.

If the Windows 11 installer file is not available for your computer, please use this link to notify us of your ULethbridge-owned computer system.

If there is a reason why you are unable to upgrade your computer system to Windows 11, such as a specialized piece of software or hardware that will not run on Windows 11, then please fill out the following form to provide a rationale so we can evaluateand quote the purchase of extended support for your computer system.

Why is this happening?

Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will reach end-of-life on October 14, 2025. That means that Windows 10 systems will no longer receive software updates, security fixes or technical assistance, making those computer systems vulnerable to cybersecurity risks.

Such security risks not only affect computer systems still running Windows 10, but all devices on the University network.  Ensuring we are all running systems that are updatedand protected keeps everyone’s data safe.
