The Department of Facilities needs to do an urgent repair on the electrical system in University Hall, which requires a power shutdown. This power shutdown means there will be no power in University Hall (UH), University Centre for the Arts (UCA) and the University Library (LINC).When will this happen?
The shutdown will happen tonight, Tuesday, December 6, from 9 to 10 p.m.
Who will be affected and how?
There will be no normal building power for UH, UCA and LINC. This means that all equipment such as computers, printers, house lights and everything else that is on regular power will not function.
Equipment plugged into emergency power is not impacted and will continue to work as expected. Emergency lighting is also not impacted.
Why will this happen?
A critical component in the electrical system is showing signs of failure and needs to be replaced to prevent a disruptive electrical system outage. To safely replace electrical components, the electrical system will need to be shutdown. Shutdown and de-energizing of the electrical equipment eliminates any arc flash hazard and mitigates shock and electrocution danger to those involved in performing this high voltage work.
How does this affect me?
Any equipment in your office will not work due to no electrical power. It is recommended to shut down computers prior to leaving for home this evening, so that computers do not have a hard shutdown due to electrical power loss.
