On November 9, 2014, Campus Security received a report of an individual on campus carrying a concealed firearm. Campus Security immediately contacted Lethbridge Regional Police Services (LRPS). Shortly after contacting LRPS, Campus Security identified an individual matching the description of the suspect and confiscated a replica BB gun. LRPS officers later arrested the individual, who is not a student at the University.
This situation was resolved peacefully and with no threat to the safety or security of the University community. The Campus Security response was immediate and LRPS arrived at the University very quickly. Student residences were secure, public spaces, labs and classrooms were empty and therefore no lockdown procedure was implemented by Campus Security or advised by the LRPS.
Despite the fact the firearm in question was a replica, it is understandable that members of our University community may be affected by this incident. Support services are available on campus for those who may need assistance. Students are encouraged to access help through the Counselling Services office (www.uleth.ca/counselling), while faculty and staff have access to the Employee and Family Assistance Program (www.uleth.ca/hr/pension-and-benefits/employee-and-family-assistance-program-efap-0).
