U of L launches new mobile safety app

The University of Lethbridge has launched a new mobile safety app called uLethbridge Safe in time for the start of the Fall 2020 semester. The app, developed in collaboration with the Graduate Students’ Association and the U of L Students’ Union, is designed to provide easy access to safety services and information for our campus communities, both virtually and while on campus.

Using a smart phone or other device, students, staff and faculty coming to campus can complete the COVID-19 daily health check currently required for anyone entering buildings on the Lethbridge campus. Provided no symptoms are present, users will receive a COVID-19 badge, in effect for 12 hours, delivered directly to the app. You may be asked by your professor, instructor, supervisor or Campus Safety to show the badge when you are on campus.

Even though most fall classes in Lethbridge — and all classes at the Calgary campus — will be held online, the uLethbridge Safe app offers services that can be used from any location.

Students and their parents will feel more secure knowing the app supplies a virtual safe walk home through their smart phone or other device. The Safe Walk feature lets students set a destination and send their location to a friend for a virtual walk home or connect with Campus Security to have them monitor them as they walk to their destination. Students who are on campus can also request that a member of the Campus Security team escort them to their vehicle or other destination on campus.

In addition, uLethbridge Safe allows students to connect with numerous support resources, including academic advising, counselling, health centre, Indigenous student services, sexual violence help and information technology services. Thanks to the direct links to emergency help, users can easily connect to 911, Campus Security or local police and fire services.

The app is available on the App Store for iPhone and iPad and on Google Play for android devices.
