Tips to Avoid Slips, Trips & Falls

Southern Alberta weather (especially winter, spring and fall) can produce rapidly changing conditions resulting in fluctuating temperatures and icy conditions. This increases the risk of slips, trips and falls. To help you stay on your feet, Safety Services invites you to practice “safe walking” and follow these prevention tips:

  • Check the weather, be prepared, and give yourself extra travel time so you don’t rush.
  • Wear appropriate, slip-resistant footwear that is designed for winter use.
  • Stay on maintained pedestrian walkways and avoid taking shortcuts.
  • As you walk, keep your hands free for stabilization. Hold the railing at the stairs.
  • Avoid distractions such as using cell phones.
  • Exercise caution when getting in and out of vehicles and in parking lots where snow can melt and refreeze.
  • On Ice? Do the penguin shuffle: point your feet outward like a penguin, take short, shuffle-like steps, keep your arms at your side and out of your pockets, concentrate on keeping your balance, watch where you are stepping and go slowly. Watch the Alberta Health Services video to see how it’s done!

Snow and ice removal from all areas on campus takes time. Facilities — Grounds Services does its best to prevent ice and clear snow as quickly as possible, but changing weather conditions can make this difficult at times.

Report ice & snow hazards:

  • If you find some slippery areas as you make your way across campus, contact: Facilities at 403.329.2602 (after hours call Security Services 403.329.2345).  You can also submit an online Hazard Report to Safety Services

IF YOU FALL (OR YOU SEE SOMEONE ELSE FALL):

  • Call Security Services at 403.329.2345 to request First Aid services or 911 in cases of emergency. Report near misses or injury incidents via the online Safety Reporting System.
  • Call Facilities to report the slippery area at 403.329.2602 (or call Security Services after hours 403.329.2345)

Additional Slip, Trip, Fall Awareness information is available on the Safety Services webpage.
