STEP Position – Web designer and content developer
The University of Lethbridge has evolved into a research-intensive, comprehensive institution. The Office of Research & Innovation Services (ORIS) is the conduit through which research funding flows to this institution to support its research mandate and the training of undergraduate and graduate students. Our office has been instrumental in increasing the level of research funding, which has quadrupled over the last 10 years. Yet we have a web site that is hard to find, harder to use and cumbersome to maintain. Given the demographics of our constituents, we need a web site that will attract potential faculty and students, contain accurate information and is easy to use.
ORIS is seeking an individual to work with the Vice-President Research and his staff, as well as the University’s Web Team Manager in Information Technology, on a complete overhaul of the web interface for the VPR and ORIS related pages. An improved web site would allow us to better communicate information to our faculty members as well as convey the research successes of our faculty and students beyond the University’s doors. Specifically, the individual will work closely with the ORIS and Information Technology (IT) to complete the following:
- Website content audit and stakeholder surveys.
- Coordinate stakeholder assessments.
- Assist in the development of the vision, menu ideas, and gap assessment of website and content.
- Design new layouts and re-design existing web pages for the Offices of the Vice-President Research, ORIS and the University Industry Liaison Office (UILO).
- Write, edit and create web content that is compelling, user-friendly and reflects the University brand.
- Ensure web site content is current, informative and relevant to users.
The individual will be the primary contact for our unit's website redesign. This will include planning, evaluating technical details, writing/editing content, reviewing with stakeholders and multiple units, and assisting with steps leading up to website launch.
The individual must conduct him or herself in a professional manner and is expected to participate as part of a team when communicating with ORIS, IT, and stakeholders such as faculty members at the University. The individual will report to the ORIS team as well as IT on the project milestones. In addition, excellent written and oral communication skills will be required to create, develop and edit web content for the websites. The individual will work closely with IT to incorporate changes into current websites, create new pages, update content, design the look of new pages, etc. At the end of the placement, it is expected that the webpages for the ORIS, Vice-President Research and other related pages will be revamped and launched to the public. As the point person for the web development and redesign project, the individual will be primarily responsible for the stewardship of the project from May until the end of August.
The candidate must be proficient in using Microsoft Office including Word and Excel as well as the Adobe Suite of programs. The candidate for this position should be familiar with user-centric design, heuristic evaluation and writing for the web. Experience using content management systems such as Drupal would be an asset.
As well, the candidate must possess the following skills:
- Proficient in writing, editing and quality control of a web site.
- Ability to work with minimum supervision.
- Attention to detail.
- Excellent English and proofreading abilities.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
STEP ELIGIBILITY:
- Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or protected person under the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and legally entitled to work and study in Canada.
- Minimum High School diploma (must be 18)
- Resides and/or attends school in Alberta with an Alberta address
- Returning to a post-secondary institution no later than November 1.
- Must be enrolled in a program that will result in a Certificate, Diploma, or Degree. Technical training for Apprenticeship is not eligible
- Not currently employed at the University of Lethbridge
- Good work ethic: great organization skills, work well independently and in groups, show initiative and pay attention to details
