Racism, no matter where it happens, affects us all. The world events over the past few weeks are deeply concerning, and we all mourn the tragic deaths of Soon Chung Park, Suncha Kim, Yong Ae Yue, Paul Andre Michels, Hyun Jung Grant, Xiaojie Tan, Daoyou Feng and Delaina Ashley Yaun.
The horrific events in Atlanta, Georgia, remind us that racism can – and does – happen everywhere. We too in southern Alberta have a dark history with respect to the treatment of Japanese-Canadians. Last week we saw many members of the Asian community – our students, staff, faculty, alumni and friends – share experiences and speak out against racism. We stand with you.
Each of us has an essential role to play to be a light in dark times and help put a stop to all forms of discrimination and racism.
Equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is a key priority for the University of Lethbridge. The University joined the National Dialogues and Action for Inclusive Higher Education and Communities in September 2020 and is currently hiring an executive director of EDI to continue to advance the University’s goals in this important area. The University’s Harassment and Discrimination policy is also available if needed.
These past few weeks have been heavy. If you or someone you know is need of help, please reach out to Counselling Services or the Employee and Family Assistance Program.
