The disturbing news, video and images that continue to come from Iran in the wake of anti-government protests has hit especially hard on Canadian university campuses and the University of Lethbridge in particular.
ULethbridge is home to many students, faculty and staff of Iranian descent and the brutal security crackdown, which has now led to clashes with students at Iranian universities, is deeply troubling. Security forces have raided universities, students have been forced to shift to an online platform for fear of attending in person and subsequently found their access to the Internet has been blocked.
This assault on academic freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of assembly and association cannot be tolerated, and we call on the government of Iran to discontinue these violent acts immediately.
The university community is a global community, strengthened by the connections forged through international research partnerships, exchanges and fellowships. We stand in solidarity with Iranian scholars and academics, their friends and families, and all those affected by these brutal events.
We endorse the public statement issued by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and stand in support of all Iranian women and the protesters who are so bravely fighting for their freedom.
