Notification: Decorative Materials & Festive Fire Hazards
Posters/Wrapping Paper & Door/Wall Coverage.
Campus Safety Services and the Lethbridge Fire Department would like to remind you not to over-decorate doors with combustible materials (i.e. paper/posters). Should a fire break out, these combustibles will contribute to fire spread and impede safe egress resulting in serious life-safety concerns.
When decorating any areas within the University, combustibles (e.g. posters, wrapping paper, paper decorations, combustible ornaments and trimmings) must not exceed 20% coverage of doors, walls and windows particularly in egress routes to ensure compliance with the Alberta Fire Code Section 2.3.1.3.3.
The Alberta Fire Code also states that “In assembly occupancies combustible materials used for festive decorations, including, but not limited to, crepe paper decorations, other combustible trimming or ornaments and Christmas trees, shall be of the flame-resistant type, or conform to CANMC-S109, "Flame Tests of Flame-Resistant Fabrics and Films.”
