SAFETY BULLETIN
PEDESTRIANS ALSO HAVE A DUTY OF CARE!
Pedestrians have the right of way unless otherwise directed by a peace officer or a traffic control device.
Did you know?
- The Alberta Traffic Safety Code section 93(2) states that pedestrians also have a “duty of care” when crossing the roadway within a crosswalk.
- And “a pedestrian shall not proceed onto a roadway into the path of a vehicle that is so close that it is impracticable for the vehicle to yield the right of way”. (Use of Highway and Rules of Road Regulation AR 304/2002)
In winter conditions, vehicles travelling on ice and snow covered roadways do not have the same braking power. Entering into a crosswalk without activating a designated crossing signal light and without checking that is it safe to enter the crosswalk, puts you, the pedestrian, at risk.
This is a reminder to:
- Please check both ways before crossing any roadway.
- Activate the pedestrian crossing lights that are located at crosswalks on both Valley Road and Aperture Drive to alert trafficof your intention to cross.
Drivers, this does not alleviate your “duty of care” to operate your vehicle safely for the road conditions and ensure that you are able to stop your vehicle to allow pedestrians to cross the road safely.
Thank you for your consideration and cooperation.
