Where there’s Snow – there’s Ice …Walk Like A Penguin to Stay Safe

When temperatures fall, so do people as the risk of slips and trips rises.  Regardless of where you encounter slippery surfaces, take a cue from an animal that lives on the ice – the Penguin!

Here’s how to do the penguin walk:

  • Bend slightly and walk flat-footed.
  • Point your feet out slightly, like a penguin.
  • Watch where you are stepping.
  • Take shorter, shuffle-like steps.
  • Keep your arms at your sides (not in your pockets).
  • Concentraate on keeping your balance.
  • Wear footwear with good grip.
  • Walk S-L-O-W-L-Y.

Streets, sidewalks and parking lots that have been cleared of snow. However, ice should still be approached with caution.  Look for “black ice”.  If often shows up ealy in the morning or in areas that are shaded from the sun.
