New measures for fall return to campus

To our campus community,

As we move into the Fall 2021 semester, the health and safety of our campus community is paramount. Today, the Universities of Lethbridge, Calgary and Alberta are announcing new and significant protocols as part of a joint back to campus strategy for this fall.

Starting September 1, our universities will require all those coming to campus to undergo regular rapid testing. Those who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 are exempt from this requirement. Students, faculty and staff who are not fully vaccinated, and those who would prefer not to disclose their vaccine status, will need to regularly complete a rapid screening test and receive a negative result before they participate in in-person activities.

Any individual who cannot be tested or vaccinated based on medical or other protected grounds recognized by the Alberta Human Rights Act can request an accommodation. Vaccinations are our best protection against Covid-19. We continue to encourage our students, faculty and staff to get immunized if they are able, as soon as possible.

The communication also announces mandatory masking on our campuses in areas where social distancing cannot occur. You may be aware that the U of L already announced this measure earlier this month.

For now, these measures will only apply to our Lethbridge campus. In the coming days, we will consult with the leadership of our Calgary campus and send a targeted message to the faculty, staff and students who study at the Bow Valley College campus about our approach for that location.

Finally, my sincere thanks to the students, faculty and staff for their efforts and patience as we continue to prepare for the Fall 2021 semester. I, like many others, am very much looking forward to seeing our campus return to the bustling and energetic hub it is was before the pandemic began.

Sincerely,

Mike Mahon, PhD
President and Vice-Chancellor
