Message from President Mike Mahon on charge against professor

This notice is from the archives of The Notice Board. Information contained in this notice was accurate at the time of publication but may no longer be so.

On the morning of May 12, Professor Nicholas Hanson was charged with sexual assault by the Lethbridge Police Service (LPS). The LPS has recently issued a media statement advising of this charge.

The University of Lethbridge has suspended Mr. Hanson from his position as a member of the academic staff in light of the very serious charge against him. He has been suspended in accordance with the Post-Secondary Learning Act of the Province of Alberta. His suspension is with pay pending the outcomes of the LPS investigation. Mr. Hanson has been removed from campus and removed from all contact with students.

The University learned of the complaint in the last few days. An internal investigation has also been initiated by the University. The University is committed to providing an environment in which sexual violence is not tolerated.

It was noted by the LPS that the complainant is a former student of the University of Lethbridge. The individual has completed her degree requirements and is therefore no longer on campus. The University has offered support to the complainant and will continue to do so as long as is necessary.

The University of Lethbridge has been and will continue to cooperate with the LPS during their investigation. Please appreciate that the University can provide very little comment on this while the LPS investigation is underway and while charges are before the Courts.

If you are feeling distress over this situation, I encourage you to seek assistance through the University of Lethbridge Employee and Family Assistance Program at 1-800-663-1142. If you are a student, please contact Counselling Services (http://www.uleth.ca/counselling/) at 403-317-2845.

Thank you.

Dr. Mike Mahon
President and Vice-Chancellor
