Lethbridge Students for Life Club displays on campus

The following is a message from President Mike Mahon:

On October 15 – 17, 2014, the Students for Life Club, a student club sanctioned by the University of Lethbridge Students’ Union has booked space, in accordance with ULSU booking practice and University policy, in the University Hall atrium (Oct. 15) and outdoor space south of the Students' Union Building (Oct. 15, 16 and 17) with the intention of promoting the “Genocide Awareness Project.”

Last year when this group was on the Lethbridge campus we saw considerable debate over the location of the displays associated this group. Some felt the right to free speech and association was infringing on the commitment of the University to a safe and harassment-free campus. In many cases, campus and community members were upset that they were unable to choose if they, or their children, would engage in the debate prompted by the displayed material.

I stated last year that the University would continue to support the ability of individuals and groups that may be controversial or have differing views to engage in protest or debate at the University of Lethbridge. Encouraging debate and promoting free speech and association should be a goal of all universities.  I also stated that such activities could be conducted in an appropriate space on campus, in accordance with the policies of the University and in a way that does not disrupt the normal operation of the University.

To that end, the following measures have been undertaken to accommodate this student club’s display:

  1. The location of the display will be in the University Hall atrium and outside the Students’ Union Building (as noted above). This is in accordance with the booking policies of the University.   Individuals will be able to choose to walk by the display or not. The location also offers alternative routes of access to different areas of campus, while, providing ample room for those choosing to traverse the space free, unobstructed passage.
  1. The ULSU will have signage at either end of the display area to better inform students, faculty, staff and community members of the display’s location and the nature of its contents.  Security Officers will also be present to advise of alternate routes if individuals want to avoid the area.

I have an expectation that everyone, regardless of their viewpoint, will conduct themselves responsibly and in accordance with the applicable laws and the policies of the University of Lethbridge.

Last year, this debate was very emotional for participants.  My hope is that despite differing opinions on this subject, participants continue to remember that such debates are critical to our democracy and are a reminder of the role of universities in our society.  If there are members of our community that are feeling distress, I would encourage you to seek help through Counselling Services (http://www.uleth.ca/counselling/) at 403-317-2845 or through the University of Lethbridge Employee and Family Assistance Program at 1-800-663-1142.

Thank you.
