Lab Safety Basics – Do You Know Them All?

Laboratories contain a variety of potential hazards, including chemical, biological, physical, radioactive and equipment-related risks. Maintaining a safe laboratory environment requires awareness, proper training and always following established safety procedures. Here's a quick guide to lab safety at the University of Lethbridge:

Complete Required Training

  • Complete all required training and laboratory orientation (e.g., WHMIS, Lab Safety Training, Site-specific Training and Orientation, etc.) and maintain records of training documentation.
  • Higher-risk laboratory work (e.g., radiation, biohazards, lasers, etc.) require additional training, approvals and documentation. Contact Safety Services prior to commencing work.
  • Volunteers participating in laboratory research or creative activities must meet specific safety and onboarding requirements. Supervisors are responsible for contacting Safety Services prior to any volunteer commencing work.

Follow Good Laboratory Practices

  • UofL Lab Safety Rules: Wear suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) for the work being performed, such as lab coats, gloves, safety glasses/face shields.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes and secure loose hair.
  • No jewelry, food, drinks or cosmetics in labs.
  • Label all chemicals and hazardous materials properly.
  • Dispose of hazardous waste according to university procedures.
  • Keep workspaces clean, organized and free from unnecessary clutter.
  • Report all incidents, spills, injuries, near misses or unsafe conditions immediately to your supervisor and Safety Services.

Know Your Lab Safety Plan

  • Ensure your Laboratory Safety Plan is current and accessible in the lab, with the contact information of Principal Investigator (PI) and emergency contact clearly posted.
  • Know the locations of emergency showers, eyewash stations, first aid kits, AEDs and fire extinguishers.
  • Familiarize yourself with emergency exits and assembly points.
