In 1969 in an effort to stimulate dialogue, some young members of the New Democratic Party (NDP) drafted a document titled "For an Independent Socialist Canada"

The authors insisted that Canada could be independent and united it it rejected its connections with the American capitalist "Empire" and instead adopted a socialist model of political-economic organization.  More-over, these individual (known as the Waffle) embraced the Women's Liberation Movement and sought to transform gender roles in Canadian Politics and society.
