The University of Lethbridge is lowering its flag today in honour of Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away at the age of 96.
The longest-serving monarch in British history, Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne in 1952 when she was just 25 years old. Her 70-year reign as leader of her kingdom and the Commonwealth traversed history and made her one of the most recognizable and stable heads of state for generations of Canadians.
Her affinity for Canada was obvious as she made 22 official visits to our country, including seminal moments such as signing the Canadian Constitution in 1982 and opening the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Her last visit to Canada was in 2010.
Queen Elizabeth will be remembered for many reasons – including her spirit of service. The Queen will be missed and we join the rest of the world in celebrating a life well lived and in grieving for her loss.
