The Lethbridge Fire Department (LFD) recently completed its annual inspection of the University of Lethbridge campus and expressed concern with some of the holiday decorations.
LFD was especially concerned about doors being decorated with combustible materials (i.e. paper/posters). Should a fire break out, these combustibles will contribute to fire spread and impede safe egress, resulting in serious life-safety concerns.
When decorating any areas within the University, combustibles (e.g. posters, wrapping paper, paper decorations, combustible ornaments and trimmings) must not exceed 20 per cent coverage of doors, walls and windows, particularly in egress routes to ensure compliance with the Alberta Fire Code Section 2.3.1.3.3.
The Alberta Fire Code also states that, “In assembly occupancies combustible materials used for festive decorations, including, but not limited to, crepe paper decorations, other combustible trimming or ornaments and Christmas trees, shall be of the flame-resistant type, or conform to CANMC-S109, Flame Tests of Flame-Resistant Fabrics and Films".
LFD has requested the removal of combustible material from doors, walls and windows in egress routes (i.e. hallways) by Friday, December 18, 2015.
Please contact Risk and Safety Services if further clarification is required concerning the use of decorative materials.
