Dear Colleagues,
I write today to announce that I have accepted the resignation of Dr. Craig Cooper as dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science, effective September 1, 2019. Starting on June 30, 2019, Dr. Cooper will take vacation followed by his accumulated administrative leave. On his return, Dr. Cooper will assume teaching and research responsibilities as a professor in the Faculty of Arts & Science. Dr. Cooper is an ancient Greek Historian, who continues to study Athenian law, Athenian orators and Greek rhetoric.
I am pleased that Dr. Matthew Letts, Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts & Science, has accepted the role of Interim Dean of Arts & Science. Associate Deans, Dr. Michelle Helstein and Dr. Harold Jansen, have agreed along with Dr. Letts, to form the leadership team for the Faculty of Arts & Science until the successful completion of a search for a new dean. To ensure minimal disruption to the Destination Project as a result of Dr. Letts’ acceptance of this role, I will ensure appropriate resources are provided to cover his responsibilities.
On behalf of the University of Lethbridge, I would like to thank Craig for his service to the University community. During Craig’s tenure as dean, the Faculty of Arts & Science has been very engaged in the considerable planning and design of the Destination Project on campus. It will still be during the course of his leadership that we see faculty moving into the new building. In addition, under Craig’s leadership undergraduate and graduate recruitment and retention has increased, as has the Faculty’s engagement in the community. Notable among these initiatives is the very successful PUBlic Professor Speaker Series and the Wine & Dine Arts & Science Scholarship Dinner, which in its inaugural year raised over $80,000 for the Dr. Bhagwan Dua Scholarship.
Please join me in thanking Craig for his leadership and commitment to the Faculty of Arts and Science and the University of Lethbridge.
