Dean of Fine Arts, Dr. Edward Jurkowski, has submitted a letter of resignation, effective December 31, 2018. Ed has been at the University of Lethbridge for 22 years, the last five years as dean. As dean, Ed has provided outstanding service and leadership to the Faculty of Fine Arts and the University of Lethbridge.

Under Ed’s leadership, the Faculty of Fine Arts has continued to thrive. The accomplishments of faculty members in teaching, creative activity and scholarship, the success of students, the engagement of alumni and community, and the introduction of new programming are all markers of the environment and culture that Ed nurtured as dean. The faculty and students of fine arts make substantial contributions to the quality of life in southern Alberta. Ed was a very public advocate and supporter of the fine arts in our community and has been a constant booster and promoter of his colleague’s accomplishments.

Ed has also taken on significant leadership roles within the broader University community. He has chaired the Strategic Enrolment Management initiatives of the University, provided leadership during a transitional phase of the Calgary campus and most recently has been a key part of the University team navigating through, with faculty colleagues, the new labour environment in which we find ourselves.

Ed will continue to serve as dean until October 31, 2018 after which he will take two months of earned administrative leave. In the coming weeks I will communicate a transition plan for the leadership of the Faculty until a new dean is in place and begin the process to appoint the next dean of the Faculty.

Ed will be returning to his hometown of Winnipeg to take on new challenges and opportunities as the Dean of the Desautels Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba.
