Don't let your battery blow it! Safe battery practices

This notice is from the archives of The Notice Board. Information contained in this notice was accurate at the time of publication but may no longer be so.

Why it matters:
Batteries are everywhere — powering your phones, laptops, power tools, cameras, eBikes, scooters and other devices. While convenient and efficient, they can pose serious fire and explosion risks if not handled properly.

⚠️ Know the risk:
The biggest hazard is thermal runaway, a chain reaction that can cause batteries to overheat, leak, burst, catch fire or even explode, sending shrapnel up to 18 metres (60 feet) and igniting multiple fires.

Safe Charging & Handling Tips

  • Use batteries and chargers that have recognized Canadian certification marks (e.g., CSA, cUL, cETL).
  • Follow manufacturer instructions for charging and use only compatible devices.
  • Avoid overcharging or charging overnight or unattended.
  • Avoid using extension cords for charging.
  • Avoid storing, placing or charging batteries or battery-operated devices on soft or flammable materials.
  • Unplug chargers or remove batteries once fully charged.

Stay informed. Stay powered. Stay safe.
