COVID-19 — Student Financial Aid Tips

The following is a compilation of available financial aid resources, as of March 19, 2020, for students during this period of active COVID-19 protocols. Please note that some of these supports may not apply to you and that resources are frequently updated. Please continue to check these links as new information may become available.

Please refer to the Government of Alberta website for details on available supports such as:

— Emergency Isolation Support – for working adults who must self-isolate
— Utility payment deferral – residential customers can defer utility payments for the next 90 days
— Alberta student loan repayment deferral – students in current repayment for Alberta student loans will have payments paused until Sept. 30, 2020 with no accrual of interest starting Mar. 30, 2020 (please visit Student Aid Alberta website)
— ATB banking customers and Alberta Credit Unions – deferral of loans, lines of credit or mortgage payments (please contact your individual institution for information)

Please refer to the Government of Canada website for details on available supports such as:

— Canada Student Loans – students in current repayment of Canada student loans will have payments paused until Sept. 30, 2020 with no accrual of interest starting Mar. 30, 2020 (please visit the National Student Loan Service Centre website)
— Emergency Care Benefit and Emergency Support Benefit for workers who are not eligible for EI and are facing unemployment (when the new benefits are available, Canadians can apply through the CRA My Account secure portal, through a My Service Canada Account or by calling a toll-free number the government plans to introduce, which will be equipped with an automated application process.)
— One time special payment for low and modest income families
— Increase of Canada Child Benefit
— Indigenous Community Support Fund
— Taxpayers can file income tax no later than June 1, 2020 and can defer payment of taxes deemed owing as of Mar. 19, 2020 until after Aug. 31, 2020

Please consult directly with your banking institution for additional possible options when managing hardships caused by recent developments.

Continuing undergraduate students are encouraged to submit the scholarship and awards application before May 1, 2020 for Fall 2020 payments. Apply via the Bridge under the Student tab.

Graduate students are encouraged to submit the scholarship and awards application by May 15, 2020 for Fall 2020 payments. Apply via the Bridge under the Student tab.
