Controversial speaker update — Safety on campus

This notice is from the archives of The Notice Board. Information contained in this notice was accurate at the time of publication but may no longer be so.

As many in our community are aware, on Monday the University announced it would not provide space for an external speaker invited to campus by one of our faculty members. This decision was made with the safety of our campus community in mind.

This individual has announced, through social media channels, their intention to use a common area of our campus later today to offer comments. The University believes the speaker is serious about attending our campus in this manner. If this scenario occurs, the University will initiate approaches that thoughtfully mitigate disruption and prioritize the safety and security of our campus community.

As always, counselling supports are available for members of our community. Students can access support through Counselling Services (http://www.uleth.ca/counselling/) at 403-317-2845 or through the Elder in Residence Program. For faculty and staff, the University of Lethbridge Employee and Family Assistance Program can be accessed by calling 1-800-663-1142. The University has also made Anderson Hall available for in-person support between 4 and 7 p.m. today.

Should a public interaction occur, it is the University’s expectation that the action of all students, staff, faculty and external community members will be lawful, with due consideration for the safety of others.
