The University of Lethbridge is saddened to learn of the passing of one of its founding members and offers its sincere condolences to the family, friends and former colleagues of Arthur Loewen, one of the driving forces behind the establishment of the Faculty of Education. Loewen passed away on Oct. 18, 2023, at the age of 96.
Born in Rabbit Lake, Sask., Loewen grew up primarily in southern Alberta and graduated from Alberta Mennonite High School in Coaldale in 1948. After working on the family farm, he set his sights on post-secondary education and earned a teaching degree from the University of Calgary and later a Master of Education from the University of Alberta.
Thus began a life as an educator where he held positions as a teacher, vice principal, principal, and school superintendent in several towns in southern Alberta before being recruited to the newly founded University of Lethbridge in 1967. He remained in the Faculty of Education, serving as associate professor, Assistant to the Dean, and Associate Dean until his retirement in 1987.
Loewen’s impact was broad and meaningful, and he and his colleagues helped establish the Faculty of Education as one of the premier education programs in the country. The Faculty founders were honoured in 2017 with the establishment of the Founding Faculty Awards, a student award in the Faculty of Education that provides $500 per year to Faculty of Education students (one in each of the 11 subject major areas).
Loewen’s legacy as an educator lived on with his son, Dr. Craig Loewen, a current professor in the Faculty of Education who also served as Dean, as well as his daughter, Dr. Pam Loewen, who served as a non-academic administrator and then assistant professor of strategic management in the Dhillon School of Business.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, 1614 – 5 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023, at 1 p.m. The University will lower its flag in honour of Loewen on that date.
