Condolence Notice: Dr. Ed McNally

This notice is from the archives of The Notice Board. Information contained in this notice was accurate at the time of publication but may no longer be so.

The University of Lethbridge extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Ed McNally, honorary degree recipient (LLD’05), and 2014 Friend of Health Sciences Award recipient.

McNally was 89 when he passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2014.

McNally, founder of Big Rock Brewery, established a scholarship for every graduate nursing student at the U of L in 2008. He made a similar gift in subsequent years, providing a McNally-funded award to every masters-level nursing student in every year of his or her studies.

The award was named in honour of his mother, Margaret Elliot McNally (Thomson), a nurse who was on the frontlines of nursing care during the First World War.

A video describing Dr. McNally’s significant gift can be found on the U of L website.

McNally was born in Lethbridge in 1925. He went on to become a lawyer, a farmer and rancher, and entrepreneur. He represented farmers who had trouble selling their malting barley and when he later became a farmer himself, he saw potential for development in the market, founding Big Rock Brewery in 1985.

McNally was committed to community work and he was awarded both the Order of Canada and the Alberta Centennial Medal in 2005.

The U of L will lower its flag in honour of Dr. McNally the day of his funeral service.
