The University of Lethbridge extends its sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Richard (Rick) Ponomar, who passed away on Wednesday, June 28 at the age of 67.
Ponomar, a founding member of the Lethbridge Astronomical Society (LAS), was instrumental in allowing thousands of ULethbridge students to experience the night sky. The LAS staffed the observatory labs for physics and astronomy students, giving them a unique opportunity to complement their studies. The relationship between the University and the LAS is nearly four decades long and for many of those years, Ponomar was at the helm of the LAS.
“While Rick was not a member of the ULethbridge staff, I could not have run the astronomy program without him,” says Dr. David Naylor, Professor and Board of Governors Research Chair in the Department of Physics & Astronomy.
An obituary is available at Legacy.com. A funeral service has been scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 5 at Martin Brothers Funeral Home located at 610 4 St. S. The University will lower its flags that day in honour of Ponomar.
