Condolence Notice — Gerhard Driedger

This notice is from the archives of The Notice Board. Information contained in this notice was accurate at the time of publication but may no longer be so.

The University of Lethbridge extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Gerhard Driedger, a valued U of L donor, who passed away Jan. 23 at the age of 93.

Driedger was a medical doctor who was born in the Free City of Danzig, now northern Poland. After the Second World War, he completed his medical studies and emigrated, with his wife and family, as refugees to Canada in 1951. They settled in Lethbridge, where Driedger worked at the Haig Clinic and practiced as an orthopedic surgeon. He enjoyed a lengthy career in medicine, retiring in 1995. Driedger was a longtime lover of history, having written about his ancestral homeland of the Vistula River delta. More details can be found in his obituary.

In honour of their parents, the Driedger family donated $100,000 to the U of L in 2014. Since Driedger was a history buff, the donation is used to support the study of history through student scholarships and special events. Thus, the annual Driedger Lecture Series was born, with the inaugural lecture held in 2016.
