Condolence Notice — Dr. Shigeru (Sam) Kounosu

The University of Lethbridge extends its sincere condolences to the family, friends and former colleagues of Dr. Shigeru (Sam) Kounosu, who passed away Feb. 6 at the age of 94.

Kounosu was one of the University’s original faculty members, coming to Canada from the United States in 1967. Born in Tokyo, Kounosu became a science teacher and taught at an elementary school for a few years before returning to university to study physics. He completed a PhD in physics at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by postdoctoral research at Princeton. Kounosu, who was an elementary particle physicist, enjoyed a lengthy career as a physics professor at ULethbridge. A full obituary is available online.

A private memorial service is being planned. In honour of Kounosu, the University will lower its flags on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
