The University of Lethbridge sends heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of Dr. Henry Bergen (LLD ’08), who passed away on Sunday, June 7 after a lengthy illness.
Bergen was a member of the U of L Senate from 2004 to 2007 and received an honorary degree in 2008. An immigrant to Canada from Germany, Bergen worked as a technologist at the Agriculture Canada Research Station. He also developed equipment that allowed scientists to increase their research effectiveness. He became an important part of the research program and was co-author on eight scientific papers.
After leaving the research station, he was soon drawn back to agricultural research. Bergen saw a need in farming for openers that were more effective in seeding and fertilizer placement. After a long process of research and development, he succeeded in developing openers with cutting tips that produced increased crop yields.
Bergen received numerous awards for his achievements in agricultural research, including being appointed to the Order of Canada in 2006. Beyond his achievements in agricultural research, he also had his eye on the overall health of the farming community, especially in regard to the health and mental health stresses associated with crop failure. With this in mind, he endowed a scholarship for a rural student studying nursing or addictions counselling.
This notice will be updated as more information becomes available.
