The University of Lethbridge expresses its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Frank Schaffer, who passed away on Monday, January 25 at the age of 80 after a long battle with prostate cancer.

Schaffer was a longtime member of the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science. He began his employment with the University on July 1, 1969 as an assistant professor in mathematics. He was promoted to associate professor on July 1, 1974 and served the U of L until his retirement on June 30, 1993. Schaffer was president of the U of L Faculty Association (ULFA) from 1973 to 1974 and was routinely involved with the ULFA executive until 1987.

His colleague, Dr. Dennis Connolly, fondly remembers their conversations about the old days at the U of L, shared over a glass or two of red wine. Recently, Schaffer generously donated his collection of math books to the department for the use of students.

At his request, no funeral service will be held. The University flag will be lowered on Monday, Feb. 1 in his honour.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to scholarships through University Advancement, the Canadian Cancer Society, Stars Air Ambulance, Chinook Regional Hospital and the Jack Ady Cancer Centre.

More details are available in his obituary.
