Condolence Notice — Dr. Einard Haniuk

The University of Lethbridge expresses its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Einard Haniuk, former Director of Research Services and long-time ULethbridge supporter, who passed away Thursday, June 15, 2023, at the age of 93.

Haniuk was born and raised in Lethbridge where he met and married his wife Kay in 1952. He earned a Bachelor of Science in agronomy from the University of British Columbia and a master’s in agronomy and PhD in soil and physical chemistry from Utah State University. He worked at the Lethbridge Research Station as an agronomist from 1953 to 1955, then spent many years living in the United States where he worked in various research settings, including as Director of Research Services at Western Michigan University and Assistant Vice-President for Researchat State University of New York at Albany.

In 1986, Haniuk took on the role of Director of Research Services at the University of Lethbridge, a position he held until his retirement.

In the ensuing years, Einard and Kay were dedicated supporters of the University, both as donors as well as attendees at many ULethbridge functions. A 2011 Legend article highlights their philanthropy and a gift they made that helped equip the Glaciology and Geoscience Lab in the Alberta Water and Environmental Science Building.

Noted for his kind and gentle demeanour, Haniuk was well respected by his peers and an easygoing friend and companion. Kay passed away in 2021, and he spent his last years at St. Therese Villa in Lethbridge.

A service will be held at Cornerstone Funeral Home, 2825 32 St. S., on Friday, June 23, 2023, beginning at 12:30 p.m. The service will be live-streamed and available for viewing on Einard's obituary on the Cornerstone website

The University will lower its flag in honour of Einard on Wednesday, July 5, 2023.
