City fines University of Lethbridge over 'Brian Sullivan Hill'

In an unprecedented move, the City of Lethbridge has taken action against the largest employer in the city for failing to comply with the city bylaw governing unsightly premises.

Bylaw 5630, or the Unsightly Premises Bylaw, states that properties must be maintained in a consistent manner to those within a one-block radius. City Manager Bramwell Strain explained the situation in an afternoon press conference.

“The University of Lethbridge has been given notice that the large mountain of soil, which we understand they have named Brian Sullivan Hill, in accordance with Bylaw 5630 – if the University fails to comply with the order, the soil will be removed and the University will get the bill. We estimate that this will cost in excess of one million dollars.”

The University has declined comment as this action is currently under review by their legal counsel.

When further details were requested from the City, Mr. Strain indicated that the presence of Brian Sullivan Hill could cause potential environmental damage including, but not limited to, the contamination of the adjacent river and the disruption of the migration of Mule Deer.

Students have noted that the uncovered pile of sediment causes their cars to be covered in silt on windy days and the grit in the air causes them to have to squint which limits their screen time while walking.
