ANTH 4850 (Wildlife and People)
Spring 2023
T 9:00-11:45 AM UH D630
This course takes an anthropological approach to understanding human-wildlife interactions through analysis of ethnographic and ecological literature. Topics will include the politics of conservation areas and ecotourism, social-ecological systems theory, cultural dimensions of relationality, and human-wildlife conflict. Students will learn about the effects of conservation initiatives on human well-being, an interconnected meshwork of material, interpersonal, psychological, and emotional factors that shape people’s visions of what constitutes a good life. The course will emphasize the merits of utilizing applied ethnographic methods to understand complex environmental issues, while also demonstrating the importance of asking theoretical questions like what it means to be human in a multispecies world.
