The City of Lethbridge Fire Department (LFD), in collaboration with Safety and Research Compliance Services, will be conducting inspections of the University campus on July 15 - 17. Under the Alberta Safety Codes Act, the Fire Department has the authority to complete an inspection of all areas of the University campus and address any safety concerns or infractions of the Alberta Fire Code.
Some concerns cited by LFD in previous years include the following:
- Fire doors being propped open.
- Storage of materials close to ceiling (minimum clearance from sprinkler heads and smoke and heat detectors is 18”).
- Misuse of electrical cords and frayed/damaged electrical cords.
- Poor housekeeping.
- Access to fire extinguishers blocked by storage of other materials.
- Compressed gas cylinders not being properly secured.
- Egress in corridors and exits being blocked by articles stored in the area.
- Coverage of combustible material on walls exceeding 20 per cent of the wall surface, which can contribute to fire spread (e.g., posters).
- Improper storage of chemicals, (e.g., not segregated according to hazard classification, lack of secondary containment if required).
- Ceiling tiles not being put back into place, which may contribute to fire/smoke spread.
Your department administration will receive an email from safety.services@uleth.ca outlining the proposed inspection schedule for your area. We encourage the supervisors/managers/staff to attend the inspection of your area as applicable.
Thank you for your cooperation in maintaining a safe and healthy environment for research, work and study.
