The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) is planning an “Information Picket” on Friday, Oct. 4, 2019 at the University of Lethbridge. The University respects the right of AUPE and its members to participate in such activities. It is important that our entire campus community understand and respect the parameters by which such activities may operate.
The following are some guidelines for those who are participating in the Information Picket and for those who wish to pursue their activities at the University unhindered.
- Picket lines must take place off-campus. The University will not permit picketing inside campus buildings or its main campus grounds.
- Participants cannot restrict or prevent entry to or exit from the University’s premises and emergency access must never be blocked. Picket participants do not have the right to delay or stop vehicles. Further, efforts should be made to ensure pedestrians are not delayed trying to access the University through picket lines.
- Those wishing to access the University during the time of the Information Picket should be respectful of the rights of the individuals who are participating and not do anything to hinder their activity.
- The Information Picket is not considered an employment activity. AUPE members who choose to participate in the picket must do so during their own personal time (lunch time) and not during their normal employment hours.
- The safety of our faculty, staff and students is always of paramount concern. However, in this case the University accepts no responsibility for the planned picket or for any associated activities. AUPE and its members are fully responsible for the safety of those who are participating in the picket line as well as the safety of the public using the sidewalks and adjacent roadways.
- The University’s WCB and liability insurance coverage excludes claims arising out of such activities. AUPE and its members are responsible for ensuring any incident or accident is reported and fully documented to Insurance and Risk.
If you have any questions or concerns about your rights as a member of AUPE, please contact Jake Cameron. For those non-AUPE members in the University community, please contact Ariane Tennant, Associate Vice President (Human Resource). ariane.tennant@uleth.ca
