What is this notice about?
Printing and copying services were moved to a new vendor with associated software in August 2025. For Mac users the old vendor’s printing software may still be present on their machine. We recommend removing this to mitigate a possible security vulnerability.
When did this happen?
The Equitrac software has been displaying malware messages for some users starting September 22, 2026.
Who is affected and how?
If you used printing before August 2025 on a Mac, you could be affected.
How to Confirm if the Software is Installed:
Before proceeding, you can verify if the legacy Equitrac software is currently present on your system by checking for its supporting directory:
- Open Finder.
- Click Go in the top menu bar, then select Go to Folder... (or press Command + Shift + G).
- Copy and paste the following path into the box and press Enter: /Library/Application Support/
- Look for a folder named Equitrac.
- If the "Equitrac" folder exists: The software is present on your system and needs to be uninstalled using the steps below.
- If the folder is missing (or you get an error that the folder cannot be found): No further action is required.
How to Uninstall the Software:
To completely remove the background printing services and all legacy configuration files, please follow these steps:
- Ensure you are connected to the Eduroam or a wired connection.
- Download the Equitrac Removal Utility (Equitrac.app file) provided by the IT department. smb://uleth.ca/misc/software/campus printing/Equitrac Removal Utility/
- Right-click (or hold the Control key and click) the downloaded application icon, then select Open.
- If a security prompt appears stating macOS cannot verify the developer, click Open Anyway.
- The utility will automatically locate the background services, terminate them, and delete the legacy folders.
- Once complete, you will see a confirmation dialog box on your screen stating, "Equitrac Components successfully removed." You may then safely close the tool.
Why is this happening?
Mac desktop and laptop devices do not have the same managed tools that are used for automatic removal of previous versions of software. The old software will need to be manually removed.
