Condolence Notice — Hans Dietrich (Dick) Kerber

This notice is from the archives of The Notice Board. Information contained in this notice was accurate at the time of publication but may no longer be so.

With deepest sympathy, the University extends sincere condolences to the family and friends of Dick Kerber, who passed away on Oct. 29 at the age of 84.

Dick and his wife, Yvonne, were long-time educators in southern Alberta and supported many community projects, including the Ecumenical Campus Ministry program. As such, they were the inspiration behind the establishment of the Kerber Friendship Program. Launched in January of this year, the program is designed to combat loneliness among students by connecting them with local families for a home-cooked meal once a month and a phone call once a week.

The Kerbers were among the first students to attend the new college in Lethbridge, with their sights set on becoming rural school teachers. Their story was highlighted in a 2017 edition of Lethbridge College’s Wider Horizons magazine.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a small family service is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. The service will be live-streamed and can be accessed through his obituary on the Cornerstone Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held in the future.

In honour of Dick, the University will lower its flag on Friday, Nov. 6.
