COVID-19 Information Update - Monday, Mar. 16

This notice is from the archives of The Notice Board. Information contained in this notice was accurate at the time of publication but may no longer be so.

The University of Lethbridge’s response to COVID-19 continues and an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) continues to coordinate efforts on all fronts.

Facilities Update

The Testing Centre is closed, consistent with the Government of Alberta’s directive to cancel all in-person classes on campus. Instructors who had planned to administer tests on Wednesday and Thursday (Mar. 18 and 19) have been notified of this decision. The Teaching Centre team will work with instructors to assist them in navigating this challenge. We have asked instructors to reach out directly to their students to make appropriate accommodations.

The University will close its recreational facilities in the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness – starting tomorrow (Mar. 17). While the building will remain open, the Fitness Centre, Ascent Climbing Centre, Max Bell Regional Aquatic Centre, the High Performance Centre, all gymnasiums and the indoor track will close at that time.

University of Lethbridge Residences will remain open for students who currently live on campus. All students with current license agreements are welcome to stay and there is no requirement to move out.

Food Services will continue to provide services on campus. Urban Market will be open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends. The Tim Hortons location in the 1st Choice Savings Centre will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. All other Food Services outlets will be closed at this time. We encourage students to use the Boost App to maximize speed of service and to promote social distancing. Additionally, some options currently remain available in the Students’ Union Building food court.

Alternative Delivery Model Update

As we move toward an alternative delivery model of instruction at the University of Lethbridge, I would like to express my gratitude to our campus community for their dedication and efforts to continue to serve our students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

These are extraordinary circumstances and we know that professors will try to deliver as strong an academic experience as possible given the challenges our community faces. Professors will have the flexibility to determine the appropriate formats necessary to deliver the remainder of the Spring semester. The University will not be extending the academic term. Implementing alternative delivery models will allow us to complete the Spring semester on time.

We recognize that some students rely on the University for access to the internet – which is expected to make up part of our alternative delivery model. The University remains open and appropriate space will be made available for students to participate in their studies in line with public health directives and recommendations. However, if students are able to access their classes remotely, we encourage them to do so to limit the number of people on campus.

Calgary Campus Update

The City of Calgary has issued a local state of emergency. We are continuing to monitor what impact this will have on our Calgary Campus. We are also working with Bow Valley College to ensure we understand decisions they may make and are able to react accordingly.

Practicums, Placements, Internships and Co-ops

University officials continue to seek clarity on the status of practicums, placements, internships and Co-ops. These experiences will continue to be paused for tomorrow (Mar. 17). Deans will be in touch with students regarding this as details become clear.

Counselling Supports

In-person counselling supports have been replaced with video-conference through the Zoom platform to enable greater student access in light of the COVID-19 situation. Face-to-face counselling and career coaching appointments will be moved to a tele-counselling format (Zoom or phone).

Your in-person session will be moved to either phone or Zoom (whatever option is better for you). Please let us know your preference as soon as possible by emailing counselling.services@uleth.ca.

If you are in need of an appointment and do not already have one booked, contact Counselling Services via email or phone (403-317-2845).

Therapy Assist Online is also available to all students, as is 7 Cups of Tea. Also, here are some tips on how to manage anxiety during this stressful period.

For employees, concerns about a new and unfamiliar illness are understandable. Eligible employees can access the Employee Family Assistance Program (EFAP) 24/7 at: 1-888-713-8623 or at https://homeweb.ca/service/login

Employees and Students Out of Country

The University of Lethbridge is offering information and support to students and employees who are out of country and who may need our help in returning home.

I also want to emphasize how important it is for our University community to be mindful of their health throughout this time. Please continue to be diligent in following Alberta Health protocols of hand washing and social distancing as we work together to limit the spread of COVID-19. If you do not feel well in any capacity, do not come to campus — please stay home and take care of yourself.

The COVID-19 pandemic remains a rapidly changing situation and we will continue to communicate regularly with our community. Please check regularly the COVID-19 web page for further updates and all related information. For further questions, contact COVID19.inquiries@uleth.ca.

Sincerely,

Mike Mahon, PhD
President & Vice-Chancellor
