Tri-agency funding and travel cancellations due to COVID-19

This notice is from the archives of The Notice Board. Information contained in this notice was accurate at the time of publication but may no longer be so.

The University of Lethbridge has been informed by the tri-agency that they will allow researchers to use agency funds for the reimbursement of non-refundable travel fees should research-related activities be impacted by the COVID-19 situation.

As this is a rapidly changing situation, the agencies, including the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) recognize that individuals may decide to cancel trips as a result of various considerations and factors such as cancelled conferences, travel advisories or personal choice due to health or other concerns.

The agencies confirm that the reimbursement of non-refundable travel fees from agency funds is acceptable considering the impacts of COVID-19. This applies to the travel of both principal investigators and research personnel, when cancellation occurs as described above.

The agencies also suggest that those travelling for agency-funded research consider purchasing cancellation insurance, or tickets that are at least partially refundable. In this specific situation, some additional cost could still be viewed as economical if it allows for partial or full reimbursement/credit in the event of cancellation.
