Have you ever wondered whether there was a way to recycle your old pens, markers, highlighters and other assorted writing materials? Now there is, and the University of Lethbridge has jumped on board.

Judy Jaeger, manager of Caretaking Services, says the University has entered into an agreement with Staples to have discarded writing materials, such as those mentioned above, put into the recycling stream.

"We learned recently that Staples recycles materials such as pens, highlighters, whiteboard markers, pretty much anything we write with," says Jaeger. "So, we contacted them and they gave us 10, banker-type boxes to use to start recycling these items. We have since ordered 40 more boxes and plan to spread them throughout the University for people to discard their writing materials."

The boxes are free of charge and once they fill up, Caretaking Services will collect the materials and deliver them to Staples for recycling. Locations for the first set of boxes include: the 24-hour area near L1050; near PE250; inside the Facilities Office area (TH101); near B650 classroom; near the Bookstore; on level 1 of Markin Hall; on level 2 in the main entrance area to Turcotte Hall; and near Barb Hodgson’s office (C526), who first alerted Caretaking Services to the Staples program.

"We'll see how it goes but we hope people will take advantage of this opportunity to get even more materials into the recycling stream," says Jaeger.
